All-star Charities

Online charity research service CharityNavigator.org, has awarded four nonprofits in the East Bay suburbs its top four-star rating. The website evaluates charities based on how much each spends on services. The big four are:

John Muir Health Foundation, Walnut Creek
$3.3 million in annual expenses, 72.4 percent spent on services, and $235,611 compensation for its president, Milt J. Smith.

Shepherd’s Gate women’s Shelter, Livermore
$5.4 million in annual expenses, 88.7 percent spent on services, and $102,963 compensation for its executive director, Steve McRee.

Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, Walnut Creek
$4.1 million in annual expenses, 86.7 percent spent on services, and $147,335 compensation for its executive director, Elena Bicker.

Ken Behring’s Wheelchair Foundation, Danville
$10.16 million in annual expenses, 76.6 percent spent on services, and $200,028 compensation for its president, David Behring.
