Dosa Place—Dublin
Vegetarian Southern Indian cuisine comes to Dublin
It’s usually a good sign—both for the food and the price—when you see natives of a particular country eating at a restaurant that serves their home cuisine. That proves true at Dosa Place, whose flavor-packed, budget-friendly menu of vegetarian South Indian fare has attracted a clientele that includes a good percentage of appreciative Indian diners.
Rather than the curries typical in Northern Indian cuisine, Dosa Place’s menu is dominated by its namesake, dosa, a kind of crepe made from rice and black lentils. There is a range of options, from plain to spicy to garlic, many of which come with a potato and curry–based masala filling. All the dosas offer generous, spilling-over-the-plate size and reasonable price—hovering around $7. They come with four flavorful dipping sauces, ranging from spicy tomato-based to cooling coconut-based.
The idly appetizer, three flying saucer–shaped pieces of spongy cake served with those same dipping sauces, provides nice value as a starter at $3.99, while Uttapam ($4.99–$7.49), thick pancakes made from rice and lentils, are another South Indian specialty worth checking out. There’s also a nice range of drinks and desserts, including mango lassi and gulab jamun.
MidDay Deals: Lunch combos, offered Mon.–Fri., 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., include getting two appetizers, a main dish, and coffee or tea for $6.99.
Red Alert: The Andhra spicy dosa is not for the faint of heart; it should be served with a fire hydrant.
Cash is King: According to the receipt, there’s a 5-percent discount for diners willing to pay cash.
Dosa Place, 7150 Village Pkwy., Dublin, (925) 235-3672. Lunch and dinner daily.
