Candle

Skill level
Easy. Cut, pour, wait.

Course description
Create a mosaic candle by arranging colorful wax pieces in a mold and pouring in melted, scented wax to bind, at Stella Luna’s drop-in studio. The cured candle is ready for pick-up the next day.

Extra credit
Host a group of girlfriends at the shop for a candle-making party.

Edibles

Skill level
Intermediate. Must resist... temptation to eat.

Course description
In Pans on Fire’s Gifts from the Kitchen class on December 4 and 14, you’ll learn how to make everything from lemon curd to New Orleans–style pralines to cappuccino fudge. Take home the creations—and the recipes.

Extra credit
Bring your own boxes and bags for immediate gift wrapping.

Knitted Scarf

Skill level
Intermediate. Try not to get tangled.

Course description
Join in the Yarn Boutique’s monthly group beginners’ knitting and crochet instruction, and learn how to hold needles, make basic stitches, and follow patterns. Bring in a project for one-on-one help.

Extra credit
At the shop’s popular spinning wheel classes, you can even make the yarn itself.

Soap

Skill level
Advanced. Remember Fight Club?

Course description
Give the gift of aromatherapy by picking up oils, dyes, and molds from Juniper Tree. While the shop doesn’t offer formal classes, the staff will send you home with recipes and DIY instructions.

Extra credit
Don’t stop at soap. Pick up lotion- and lip balm–making supplies, too.
