OSCAR WATCH
We are pulling for Pixar’s WALL-E to add Oscar to his stash of Rubik’s Cubes and knickknacks. The Emeryville animators' film is certain to contend for Best Animated Feature, if not Best Picture, at the Academy Awards on February 22.
SMALL SCREEN
On smaller screens, with serious themes, Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans, by Berkeley filmmaker Dawn Logsdon and New Orleans journalist Lolis Eric Elie, airs this month on PBS as part of Black History Month. The film focuses on a surprisingly progressive period in the Big Easy, circa 1800.
MOVIE BUZZ
19-year-old Brentwood native Chelsea Makela’s movie career kicks off when Dance Flick opens February 6. [Editor's Note: shortly after the magazine was sent to print, it was announced that Dance Flick's opening was delayed until May] Makela plays a suburban girl who just wants to—jazz hands—dance, in this spoof of Hairspray and Flashdance from the Wayans brothers.
