First-time restaurateur Warren Anderson planned to open an old-school deli with a few special house-made barbecue items. That quickly changed, as customers, including a steady lunchtime flow of students from nearby San Ramon Valley High, gravitated toward Iron Horse’s dry, smoked Texas-style barbecue.
You can still get any sandwich you want with top-quality roasted turkey and beef, and smoked-in-house bacon, but the real fun here is in that expanded BBQ menu: The trimmed pork rib rack (half for $14, full for $19) is good, while the melt-in-your-mouth tender, dry-rubbed brisket is even better. Plates are served with two sides and two slices of light ‘n‘ fluffy Texas toast.
Meet your Meat: Anderson uses Halal meats whenever possible because they are leaner, healthier, and contain fewer additives (such as phosphates).
Beef Battle: If you’re man enough, take the Custer’s Last Stand challenge: Eat a monster burger with two 20-ounce patties on a 10-inch bun, along with extra-large fries, in under an hour, and the burger’s on the house.
BBQ Flair: Pick one of Iron Horse’s house-made sauces to spice things up.
