Funk Art Warriors

In the third century BC, Chinese emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered his subjects to create an army of life-size terra-cotta warriors to guard his burial tomb. More than 2,000 years later, those warrior poseurs inspired San Francisco artist Wanxin Zhang to create an army of his own. They will be on display at Walnut Creek’s Bedford Gallery in an exhibit entitled Contemporary Warrior: Modern Day Tomb Soldiers. A fan of the Bay Area Funk Art movement, Zhang playfully equips his warrior sculptures with modern-day accessories, such as John Lennon-style spectacles and snowboards.

The show runs January 13 to March 9. Bedford Gallery, Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek, (925) 295-1417, www.bedfordgallery.org
