Super Cellar

Supermarket. Wine. Department. Before you go rolling your eyes, consider that Draeger’s has been named Wine Retailer of the Year by Wine Spectator.

Draeger’s, with a store in Blackhawk Plaza, was the only vendor in the country to receive the award. Speaking with wine department manager Norman Medina, it’s clear why. Selection runs from bargain-priced Argentinian Malbecs to first-growth Bordeaux. Staff tastes 150–200 bottles weekly, and a trained wine steward almost always works the floor.

Here are three of Medina’s favorite wines.
2005 Jacques Puffeney Arbois Poulsard ($29.99) Pale ruby in color, light to medium bodied, mimics Pinot Noir, and has a “pleasantly rustic edge,” says Medina.
2007 Manincor Moscato Giallo ($21.99) “The taste explodes with grapefruit and jasmine, but good acidity reels it all back in. A great cheese-course wine.”
2005 Dancing Hares Vineyard Mad Hatter Napa Valley ($54.99) “This is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with aromas of violet and cassis. It’s the most exciting Napa red wine that I’ve tasted all year.”
