Come on, get happy

Local teacher creates and endorses Project Spontaneous Smiley, inspires Diablomag

Ruth Kaiser is endearing and earnest when discussing Project Spontaneous Smiley, a compilation of photos of everyday objects and scenes in which the image of a smiley face appears.

“I know it sounds corny, but I think everyone wants to be happy,” the Orinda resident says of her project.

Kaiser, a teacher who runs six East Bay preschools, started uploading her smiley photos on Facebook about a year ago while encouraging others to enter their own. There are now more than 2,000 members, from Denver to Denmark, who have uploaded thousands of photos, and that number is growing exponentially.

And now it’s your turn. Diablo is holding a smiley contest. Just download any photos you find of smiley faces in everyday life. We’ll display the photos on our website, and Kaiser will pick her favorites. Winners will receive cool prizes, including the grand prize, a dinner for two at Amber Bistro in Danville. Go to diablomag.com/smiley to participate.
