Time to push aside your child’s Easy-Bake Oven kits for something quick, easy, and much healthier than those overpriced packets of powder. The Cook It in a Cup kit, created by Lafayette resident Julia Myall, lets kids create meals and treats in single-serve silicone cups that can be baked, roasted, microwaved, and even frozen.

Myall, a former pastry chef for San Francisco’s La Folie and owner of Lettuce Cater, got the idea after watching her own kids gravitate toward quick but sugary after-school snacks. She wanted to show them that healthy foods could also be quick and delicious.

The Cook It in a Cup kit includes a cookbook and six rainbow-colored silicone baking cups that do much more than hold cupcakes. Myall has filled the spiraled, photo-packed, 64-page cookbook with recipes such as tomato, bell pepper, and olive frittata; mini meat loaves; and, yes, plenty of sweet treats, including little pear pies and mini strawberry shortcakes. Myall also includes tips on kitchen safety to guide young cooks, and clearly marks which steps require adult supervision.

Cook It in a Cup, a Parents’ Choice award winner, retails for $16.99. You can find it at many local bookstores and online retailers. Kids can enroll in a Cook It in a Cup Camp this summer at Joaquin Moraga Middle School. For camp details and to register, go tocookitinacup.com.
