Walnut Creek native, Cass McCombs, releases new album "Catacombs" on July 7

A few years ago, Cass McCombs was selling tickets and popcorn at the Lafayette Park Theater, and spending the rest of his time writing songs and playing guitar. Eventually, the soft-spoken Walnut Creek native decided to do the music thing full-time. He drifted from coast to coast, playing small clubs. People listened—and McCombs signed a deal with U.K.–based Domino Records.
McCombs’ 2008 CD, Dropping the Writ, got great reviews (NPR called it “eccentric and tender … influenced by the Velvet Underground and Morrissey”), and soon he was opening shows for indie rock darlings Modest Mouse. The 31-year-old singer’s newest album, Catacombs, hits stores July 7, and it looks to be a major breakthrough. The album’s first single, “Dreams-Come-True Girl,” is a killer—and the video has become a YouTube sensation. The surreal clip plays like something from a David Lynch film, and features McCombs trading vocals with 1970s film star Karen Black.
