Skate Art
The art of skateboarding hits Walnut Creek's Bedford Gallery.

Remember when skateboarders were a bit of a nuisance, rattling around in shopping mall parking lots and thumbing their collective nose at The Man? Who knew those four-wheeled thrashers weren’t just alternative transportation visionaries but a wave of cutting-edge visual artists as well?
Bedford Gallery Curator Carrie Lederer knew, that’s who. Lederer has gathered Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art, a vibrant exhibit examining four decades of sculpture, photography, video, and a whole bunch of colorful skateboard decks. “I’m particularly thrilled to have some of Winston Tseng’s fantastic superhero decks (pictured) on display,” says Lederer. “I contacted Tseng in New York to tell him about the exhibit, and explained that we are a gallery in Walnut Creek, California. He said, ‘I know exactly where you are—I grew up in Lafayette!’ “
Skate aficionados should note that a special reception will be held July 9, with Walnut Creek natives—and skateboard legends—Corey Duffel and Holly Lyons on hand as guests of honor.
Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art runs from July 5 to September 13 at Bedford Gallery, 1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek, (925) 295-1417, bedfordgallery.org.
