Pet Madness
The winner is … Brewster!
By Ethan Fletcher
Want to meet the East Bay’s most popular pet? Behold, the winner of Diablo’s first Pet Madness contest—Brewster. We asked our readers to send in pics of their little darlings, then held an online vote for the favorites in a tournament-style competition. We received nearly 250 pictures and thousands of votes. The final four received gift certificates from Dog Bone Alley in Alameda and Danville. If these pet owners are even half as committed to people as they are to their pets, they must be really nice to have as friends.
RUFUS

Age: Three years. Owner: Michael Beinke of San Ramon. Rufus’ Story: An English bulldog, Rufus was acquired from a breeder in Philadelphia and comes from true English bulldog stock from London. Quirks: Dropping to the ground with his legs extended when fed up with a walk, and the ability to sleep while standing up. Final Word: “He is the perfect bulldog. If someone were to approach me about doing film or photo work, I would be open to it.”
| ROCCO
Age: 15 months. Owner: Meghan Wersel of Walnut Creek. Rocco’s Story: Rocco was adopted from Safe Haven for Cats, a Redwood City nonprofit that rescues and raises abandoned kittens. Quirks: Doubling as an unfailingly reliable alarm clock in the morning. Final Word: “Rocco is not just my pet. He is my friend, and I cannot imagine my life without him.”

BREWSTER Age: Four years. Owner: Angie Snoberger of Livermore. Brewster’s Story: Brewster was rescued in Oklahoma as a stray along with his mother, Peggy Sue. Snoberger put the $100 gift certificate from Dog Bone Alley up for auction to raise money to support other Brittany spaniels. Quirks: Frequently rolling over to encourage passersby to rub his belly. Final Word: “We call Brewster our sensitive Brittany; he knows when you need a ‘doggie’ hug.” | JIMI
Age: 13 years and going strong. Owner: Justin Weymouth of Alamo. Jimi’s Story: Acquired in San Ramon, Jimi is half Malamute, one quarter Husky, and one quarter Rhodesian Ridgeback. Quirks: Pressing his nose up against a glass door when he wants to come in the house—so that he looks like a bat. Final Word: “He has been the best pet that I could ever have hoped for and a loyal companion my whole adult life.” |
