Wild Child

Daniel San Souci’s series of Clubhouse Books is based on his own childhood adventures—like the time he saw spacemen in the Lafayette hills. “Later, I realized that they were painters or exterminators,” says San Souci, an Oakland-based author and illustrator of more than 60 children’s books. “But at the time, my friends and I were sure we had seen men from Mars.”

San Souci invites young readers into his remembered world in his Clubhouse Books. The series, for children ages four through nine, follows a group of imaginative kids who navigate a neighborhood filled with adventure and mystery. San Souci launched the series with The Dangerous Snake and Reptile Club in 2004; Space Station Mars (pictured) followed last October. Next up is The Amazing Ghost Detectives, due in September. “Of all the books I’ve worked on, these have easily been the most fun,” he says. “These were stories I told to my own kids when they were growing up.”
