For its first full-length feature dance production, Diablo Ballet takes audiences to the ball and to the opera. Once Upon a Ballroom tells the story of Dalila, a beautiful young woman who is being fitted for a gown that she will wear to a society affair. Music inspired by opera’s most lush arias and duets wells up, and she is transported into a dreamland of dancing mannequins, sensual pas de deux, and unleashed desires.

The production, which makes its world premiere this month at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, combines grand classicism, playful modernity, romantic longing, and lavish sets and costumes. “I want to create a production that everyone will enjoy and that will grab you and transform you into a ballet lover,” says coartistic director Nikolai Kabaniaev.

Diablo Ballet performs Once Upon a Ballroom on March 21 and 22 at the Lesher Center for the Arts, 1601 Civic Dr., Walnut Creek, (925) 943-7469, www.lesherartscenter.org.
