Walk It Off
Quit working and start walking. That’s the message from Wellness City Challenge, which just kicked off Walking Wednesdays, its latest Walnut Creek–wide fitness initiative. This program encourages people to take a midday break once a week and get physical. “People get so caught up with work that they can’t get out and exercise,” says program director Pete Bauman.
The same people who brought the city the Healthy Restaurant Association have organized the strolls to take place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Four routes—downtown, Shadelands Office Park, Rossmoor, and near John Muir Medical Center—are one to two miles long. Local businesses are cosponsoring; those located along the routes will offer walkers snacks or bottles of water. Walkers receive an added incentive in the form of discount cards good at Sports Basement and other stores.

I think Diablo Magazine is overlooking one of the best things about living in this area and thats the miles of open space trails available for us for hiking, biking, or just getting out to explore and enjoy nature. East Bay Regional Parks always has a full menu of fun things to do for everyone (from 1 - 100) and for every level of fitness.
Another wonderful resource available to us is the East Bay Casual Hiking Group. They have wonderful, and experienced hike leaders who collaborate with organizations such as the MDIA. Not only does the East Bay Casual Hiking group lead hikes but they also offer opportunities to work with Park Trail crews to help maintain the park trails.
I would like to see a monthly section in your magazine highlighting a local hike. We have so many to choose from!
I have spent the past ten years exploring the wide expanse of what I like to call my backyard! Whenever I have out of town guests I bring them out to the open space and choose a hike geared to their level of experience and endurance. They are always blown away at the beauty of the open space and how it is only minutes from the downtown areas. We are so blessed to have access to such diverse fauna and flora. We are blessed to have this all at our "toe" tips!
You can showcase each hike with a photograph featuring the best aspects of the hike and have provide details on the hike including accessiblity, distance, level of difficulty etc.
I would just like to bring to your attention an overlooked benefit of living in Contra Costa County. Now, I going to lace up my trail runners and head out the door!
Nice job!
I would like to see more articles like this (i.e., practical application) to exercise and explore our backyards.

Nice Job!
I'd like to see more articles on what we can take advantage of (i.e., programs, events or open spaces) and I can use the encouragement to break my weekly routine.
Thanks!!
