For Krista Markell of Sugarcoat It Studio in Berkeley, seeing her works of art vanish is all in a day’s work. Markell’s medium isn’t oil paints or acrylics—she uses fondant icing to create custom cakes that are edible masterpieces.

Formerly a marketing director in the furniture design industry, Markell has transferred her love of detail and design to her passion for baking and decorating cakes.

Markell’s cakes are stunning, not to mention delicious: the Valrhona with Callebaut chocolate ganache and chocolate butter cream as well as the coconut cream cake with coconut butter cream and toasted coconut flakes have a fine texture, natural taste, and beautiful look. The fondant might be too sweet for some palates, but that’s its nature.

Check out Markell’s online gallery at sugarcoatitstudio.com.
