Turquoise Mediterranean Grill — Orinda

Turquoise isn’t just a reference to the blue of the Mediterranean Sea or the color of this restaurant’s interior. The light and airy hue could be a metaphor for this Orinda eatery’s food. Everything from the grilled kebab sandwiches ($5) served with a refreshing yogurt sauce, to the hummus, to the made-to-order falafel ($5 for a sandwich, $10 for a meal) has a light, healthy feeling. Fitting with the healthy theme, the menu features plenty of vegetarian options, including four veggie sandwiches ($5) and six veggie plates ($10–$12), which are served with salad and a choice of rice or pita bread, with hummus or baba ghanoush.

While you’re in the neighborhood: Turquoise has a great location on Moraga Way in downtown Orinda. Catch a movie at the nearby Orinda Theatre, or grab a latte at Peet’s or Starbucks.

For the Kids: Don’t worry, there are plenty of kiddy options: a tasty more-Athens-than-Nations burger ($4.19), delish fries ($1.59), and the Pit-Za ($2.99), a kid-friendly Mediterranean take on a pizza slice.

Must-Have: The house-made baklava is truly delicious, with a less gooey and lighter texture than the norm. Watch out, though: It’s been known to sell out.

Service: The staff is friendly, funny, and eager to please.

Turquoise Mediterranean Grill, 70 Moraga Way, Orinda, (925) 253-2004. Lunch and dinner daily.
