Woman’s Best Friend

Ever wonder what your pet is thinking? Meet Wilma, the blogging dog.

Johnny Wow

When Berkeley potter Rae Dunn was photographed for Martha Stewart Living, her Jack Russell terrier, Wilma, sat patiently at her side, ears outstretched. Looking at the picture, Wilma writes, “I was dreaming about the big steak my mom promised me after the photo shoot. It was totally worth it.”

Such canine musings are cataloged weekly on the blog Wilma’s World along with impossibly cute photos, such as Wilma in birthday hats and goofy sweaters, balancing a bagel on her head, or weighing herself post vacation—some of which are available as greeting cards on Etsy.

“Wilma’s World evolved from my own blog. I’m an avid picture taker, and it turns out, Wilma is extremely photogenic,” says Dunn of the seven-year-old pup. “She’s so expressive. Looking at pictures of her, I can hear what she’s thinking. Really, it’s her talking; I’m just typing.”

When she’s not keeping warm near the kilns at Dunn’s studio, Wilma loves to run near the water in Berkeley and Emeryville, and visit pet shop George on Fourth Street for its dog-friendly cakes and treats.

“Wilma brings me so much joy; I thought she’d bring other people joy,” says Dunn, who is considering publishing a photo book or illustrated children’s book. “And, it’s true: Everyone loves Wilma. She makes them smile with those crazy ears. If I don’t post for a while, people e-mail me.”

“This is my mom’s idea of a well-balanced breakfast.”

Rae Dunn

“Is it just me, or does my cake get smaller and smaller every year?”

Cute. I don't think that's a Jack Russell though. Jack Russell terriers don't have that ticking, that's a rat terrier thing. She looks a bit big so she's probably a mix of the two.
