FANS OF the smash reality show Project Runway are in for a treat this month, as star Tim Gunn comes to Danville on May 4.

Gunn, the mentor to Project Runway’s up-and-coming designers, will judge gowns by 12 students from San Francisco’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. On the judging panel with Gunn will be Gina Pell, founder of shopping website Splendora.com, and Diablo’s fashion editor, Carolyn Rovner.

Organized by Danville’s Rakestraw Books, this couture competition will benefit The Princess Project, a Bay Area charity that gives free prom dresses to high school students who can’t afford to buy them on their own.

Gunn was going to be in the Bay Area to promote his new book, A Guide to Quality, Taste and Style, and Rakestraw owner Michael Barnard wanted to offer more than just a reading. “When I was first pitched the book, I was excited because Project Runway is the only show I TiVo with any regularity,” says Barnard. “The fashion show idea became more and more elaborate—to the point where it has become the most elaborate event we have ever done.”

Project FiveFour 07 with Tim Gunn, May 4, 7 p.m., $30. For information, call (925) 837-7337, or go to www.rakestrawbooksindanville.com
