New Cookbook

The East Bay’s critical mass of food lovers and chefs keeps turning out cookbooks. This fall’s crop includes an inspiring kitchen manual for tots, recipes culled from weblogs, and instructions on how to make sophisticated dishes from one of San Francisco’s cherished restaurants.

SALAD PEOPLE
By Mollie Katzen
Tricycle Press, $17.95
Children as young as three can become the chefs of the house with this charmingly illustrated guide to making such items as “tiny tacos,” with two tortilla chips, and “salad people,” with sliced vegetables and fruits. Katzen is a Berkeley resident most famous for her vegetarian Moosewood Cookbook.

DIGITAL DISH
Edited by Owen Linderholm
Press for Change Publishing, $19.95
Lafayette resident Linderholm says he had a revelation the first time he read a food blog. “[It] was some of the most interesting writing about food I had ever come across,” he writes of his web discovery. His book gathers exclusively from blogs, and some entries read more like comedy monologues than recipes.

BOULEVARD: THE COOKBOOK

By Nancy Oakes and Pamela Mazzola, with Lisa Weiss
Ten Speed Press, $50
Kensington resident Oakes, owner of San Francisco’s Boulevard, teams up with two trusted colleagues for her new cookbook. Clear explanations of how to make tasty dishes like buttermilk-brined fried chicken are consistent throughout. This is the tome to get for the serious food lover in your life.
