Health food in the East Bay is losing its snob appeal. Two new restaurants combine healthy, often organic ingredients to create quick meals—that don’t cost that much more than a Big Mac.

In downtown Berkeley, Amanda’s Feel Good Fresh Food serves fast food that’s healthy, fresh, and low calorie. Amanda’s burgers and salads are made with naturally raised beef, whole wheat buns, and organic greens, and range from $3.75 to $7. Founder Amanda West (pictured) even makes her sodas fresh, in-house, using sparkling water and syrups.

In Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood, the Mixing Bowl is the newest kid on a block that boasts such neighbors as Bakesale Betty, Doña Tomás, and Pizzaiolo. Owner Grace Lee (pictured), an upscale wedding planner, opened this cozy cafe in May, offering a variety of salads and sandwiches in the $4.50 to $8 range. The most expensive item is the delicious hanger steak salad ($8.50). Lee’s father grows the restaurant’s organic greens in his backyard.
