Found Objects, Fine Art
Oakland sculptor Spins Art out of plastic forks and knives.
When sculptor Dave Meeker talks about spinning straw into artistic gold, he kind of means it. Meeker takes mundane found objects and transforms them into sculptures, wall hangings, and light fixtures. The former glassblower also creates exquisite bowls out of plastic forks, spoons, and knives.
“Once you realize they’re not made of something finer like glass or porcelain, a mental flip occurs,” says Meeker, 50. “I’m trying to break down preconceived notions and make people really see the intense beauty surrounding us. Upon closer examination, what they assume to be one thing actually becomes something else.”
Working out of his home studio in Oakland, Meeker strives to “keep materials honest,” using nothing but heat and technique to fuse together components. Inspired by such organic forms as sea urchins, birds’ nests, and ice formations, Meeker’s work reveals a fascination with spiky shapes.
“They’re like the beginning of an explosion, of an idea starting to spread,” he explains of his pieces. “I want to create a catalyst for conversation and show people that they can grab whatever is readily available to make art.”
