Sweet Poll

As the contentious election season draws to a close, it’s nice to see there’s at least one thing Republicans and Democrats can agree on: chocolate.
Since early July, when both parties’ presidential nominees were decided, Moonstruck Chocolate Café in Walnut Creek has found a unique way to keep a finger on the community’s political pulse. The sweets shop has been selling two types of chocolate truffles: one shaped like a donkey, the other like an elephant. And, as each one is sold, Moonstruck’s staff keeps a running tally on a white board that hangs from the counter.

Barack Obama might be pleased to hear that as of early October, the donkeys were in the lead, with a 332-to-309 advantage. But, according to assistant manager Kelly Gunnell, the race has been neck and neck, with liberal-leaning customers making a surge, after elephant truffles took a brief early lead. According to Gunnell, older customers have tended to lean Republican, as have young kids, although for different reasons.

“The kids mostly pick the elephants because they think they’re cuter than the donkeys,” says Gunnell
