We used to have two choices when it came to cupcakes: vanilla or chocolate. Always slathered with artificially colored frosting. Maybe with a few sprinkles.

Well, that just doesn’t cut it in a foodie culture that offers such gourmet versions as Madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcakes and chocolate sour cream cupcakes with coffee bean buttercream.

Teacake Bake Shop offers seasonal classes in upscale cupcake creation. This month’s focus is on holiday flavors such as pumpkin, apple, and gingerbread. Each class teaches students how to make two different cupcakes and frostings (such as cinnamon cream cheese) with holiday-themed fondant decorations.

“The classes are very hands-on,” says Sarah Meyeroff, class coordinator and instructor. “We have two instructors and just
six students so we can cater to the individual.”

All classes are at the Lafayette store at 35 Lafayette Circle. For information, call (510) 655-0865, or visit teacakebakeshop.com
