Yoga and fine wine pair up for some serious buzz

Some things go great together. Dinner and a movie. Beer and a ball game. But wine and yoga?

Apparently so. The monthly Sip and Stretch yoga class at Emeryville’s Periscope Cellars winery has a devoted following of oenophile yogis who pair Downward Dogs with Pinot Noir.

The class involves leisurely breaks between poses so that students can sit with their glasses and breathe in the aroma of the wine. Instructor Suzi Potts makes a point to “add an element of fun.”

Serious yoga enthusiasts should know they won’t get a hard-core workout from Sip and Stretch. They may, however, enjoy one of their most pleasant wine-tasting experiences ever. And surprising things can happen with the yoga. At least one yoga student didn’t topple over as usual in the Tree Pose—or “Vine Pose,” as Potts calls it.

This month’s Sip and Stretch takes place November 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Space is limited, so register at periscopecellars.com.
