Ski bums are holding their frosty breath to see the downhill wonders of Warren Miller’s Wintervention, hitting the big screen in East Bay cities this month. For hardcore powder fans—including the pros featured in Wintervention—an annual pilgrimage to see the latest from Warren Miller Entertainment marks the official kickoff to ski season.

“I was seven years old, and just getting into skiing when I watched my first Warren Miller film,” says Squaw Valley’s Doug Stoup, who appears in the film. “I have clear memories of living vicariously through the skiers on screen and dreaming of doing that myself.”

In Wintervention, Stoup skis on the southernmost and northernmost points on Earth, leading expeditions to Antarctica and Norway. “I’m jaded because I ski constantly—220 days per year,” says Stoup. “But these two segments were two of the best trips of my life.”

Wintervention plays November 4 at Livermore’s Bankhead Theater (bankheadtheater.org), November 16–17 at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center (lesherartscenter.org), and November 21 at Pleasanton’s Amador Theater (skinet.com)
