Oakland Museum of California’s chief curator of art, Phil Linhares, put a lot of miles on his car researching the museum’s upcoming L.A. Paint exhibit. Linhares has spent the last 18 months crisscrossing the Southland—from Chatsworth to the Salton Sea—to find a showcase of 10 cutting-edge artists to present here in the East Bay.
“Los Angeles has developed into a major American art capital,” says Linhares. “In terms of painting, it’s a time of pluralism—there isn’t any one dominant form. To my eye, there are four major developments happening in the L.A. art scene: the new abstraction, narrative strain, fantasy/surrealist, and the lowbrow movement (see Robert Williams’ Hot Rod Race, below). We’ll be showing some exciting, evocative work from each style.”
