Barrel Aged does the classics right, giving Martinez’s sleepy restaurant scene a much-needed shot in the arm. Burgundy tufted booths, Mason jar drinking glasses, and a swinging jazz soundtrack set a vintage vibe, and the food is similarly old-school. Meals begin with complimentary house-made corn bread. A down-home BLT and hearty meat loaf evoke nostalgia without getting tricky, and the namesake burger gets a rich, smoky depth from barrel-aged blue cheese and onions caramelized in bacon fat. Still, the real stars here are the cocktails. A Martinez (gin, vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and bitters) receives winelike complexity from barrel aging, and it’s easy to forget an order of flavorless fried green tomatoes after a peach mule with fresh ginger or refreshing mint-and-cucumber Pimm’s Cup. Lunch and dinner daily, Sunday brunch.
