This casual eatery, with additional locations in Rockridge, Montclair, and Alameda, has some of the most deeply flavored Indian chutneys in town, but you’ll hardly need them with the highly seasoned food. On our visit, we enjoyed the vegetable samosas, with their crackly pastry crust and spicy potato filling, and paper-thin pappadam so peppery it brought tears to our eyes. An order of aloo gobi—stewed potatoes and cauliflower—was somewhat mellower in flavor. Also mild was the chicken tikka masala, which boasted supertender white meat chicken. The only miss was the green salad topped with pitted canned black olives, which, we discovered with skull-jarring impact, weren’t all pitted. Track lighting and silk tapestries soften the otherwise chilly concrete-floored dining room. Service is prompt but not coddling. Lunch and dinner daily.
