Grégoire Jacquet, former executive sous chef at San Francisco’s Ritz-Carlton, hit his stride in Berkeley making extraordinary, upscale California-French takeout. His second location, on Oakland’s busy Piedmont Avenue, is the perfect place to grab picnic supplies or a decadent dinner (there are a few stools at which to eat). Baby spinach salad comes with a knockout feta lemon dressing and a scattering of roasted pine nuts. Soups such as carrot cauliflower, are velvety masterpieces, and each and every potato side dish (french fries, gratin, truffled, mashed, and golden fried puffs) ought to be labeled habit-forming. Many dishes on the menu (which changes monthly) recall Grégoire’s homeland, France, such as house-made pork rillettes on a baguette and a perfectly grilled steak with blue cheese. Desserts—we loved a miniature loaf pan of bread pudding—are charming. Lunch and dinner daily.
