Dan Ashley talks about being lead vocals for rock band Push.

Dan Ashley is well known as the news anchor for ABC-7, but who knew he had an inner rock star waiting to take the stage? The Walnut Creek resident and four local musicians now make up Push, a classic rock band, featuring Ashley on lead vocals.
Q: How did you get this gig?
A: This band played my charity golf tournament for Friends of Camp Concord, and they invited me to sing a song with them. We did “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” and they liked the way I carried the tune and the way I interacted with the crowd. A couple weeks later, they invited me to be the lead singer. I was completely surprised, but it sounded like fun. I’ve been playing a lot less golf and have been taking singing lessons every week.
Q: Assuming you won’t quit your day job to go on the road, what are the goals of Push?
A: We all have real jobs, so it’s really just a way to have fun. I have always loved all kinds of music, so it has been gratifying to be a part of making music rather than just listening to it. We have a series of gigs lined up for September and October, and we’ll use a portion of the proceeds for charitable causes.
Q: If you could open for any band, who would it be?
A: My favorite band is the Rolling Stones. Maybe they would let us play after everyone left the concert and the crew was tearing down the stage.
