If you’ve ever tuned in to Downton Abbey and wondered how good turn-of-the-century England’s aristocracy smelled, San Ramon’s Michele and Scott Latifi have solved this olfactory puzzle. The husband-and-wife team’s company, Aidan Aryl Enterprises, LLC, won the blessings of Downton Abbey’s producers to craft a line of seven fragrances based on the show’s leading ladies, for the women who tune in to watch them every Sunday.
The Downton Abbey Fine Fragrance Collection encapsulates the traits of the characters—the directness and wittiness of the Dowager Countess of Grantham or Lady Mary’s sophistication—using a pure perfume formula, which lasts longer. The Latifis, who were fans of the show before they started designing the scents, spent months testing multiple combinations for each character. “Each fragrance is meant to represent the character and her journey as a whole,” says Michele. “We both agreed Lady Mary needed something strong and unique, and it ended up not being floral at all. And Daisy is very fresh and open, so we wanted something that would represent that, like a prairie field.” To select your scent, opt for the Ladies of Downton sampler set, which lets you sniff all seven. And don’t worry, gentlemen—a Men of Downton collection is in the works.
