You don't have to wait until Cinco de Mayo to enjoy a margarita or dos.

Rachelle Cihonski

National Margarita Day? We know what you’re thinking: Cinco de Mayo is in May—and it’s February.

Yes, we know how weird it sounds, but we never joke when it comes to national holidays, especially ones involving alcohol. And if you can’t exactly up and leave on the next flight to Cancún to celebrate National Margarita Day on February 22, enjoy a margarita break at Maria Maria, which offers generous happy hour specials on the signature libation throughout the week. We asked Maria Maria operations manager Ivan Gonzalez for the secret behind the Danville and Walnut Creek restaurants’ most popular margarita, the Margarita de la Casa.

“Our house margarita is shaken and served over ice. Serving most of our margaritas over ice keeps the integrity of their flavors,” says Gonzalez. The restaurants also use fresh lime juice and a house-made agave cordial—agave nectar, triple sec, and brandy—“for an added punch,” he says.

You may not get the day after National Margarita Day off to recover (it falls on a Sunday), but use the holiday as an excuse to order a drink on the rocks. You deserve it.
