Knitting Craze

Published:

Like so many other do-it-yourself hobbies, knitting has seen a new media resurgence of late. Yarn websites, online knit-alongs and TV shows all fuel the frenzy, but by far the most satisfying way to join the craze is to frequent one of the East Bay’s top knitting boutiques.

Vintage suitcases packed with yarn hint at owner Jeanine Johnson’s former life as a flight attendant at Fashion-Knit in Walnut Creek. The store organizes Knit Nites, and customers’ creations are showcased in the store’s online gallery. 675 Ygnacio Valley Rd., Walnut Creek, (925) 943-3994, fashionknit.net.

A Knitting 1 class at Lafayette’s Yarn Boutique will have you casting on and binding off in no time. The store caters to all, from curious newbies to experienced crocheters. 963-C Moraga Rd., Lafayette, (925) 283-7377, yarnboutique.us.

The yarn repertoire at Pleasanton’s Knit This, Purl That includes fibers from free-trade groups such as Rio de la Plata and Marisol. 205-A Main St., Pleasanton, (925) 249-9276, yourknittingplace.com.

There’s a chic vibe and a fine selection of yarns at Article Pract in Oakland. Plus, owner Christina Stork’s website is loaded with links to free patterns. 5010 Telegraph Ave., Oakland, (510) 595-7875, articlepract.com.
