Boutique Heaven: College Avenue, Rockridge
Get your fashion fixes in charming Rockridge.
Winter is upon us, and the stretch of College Avenue in Oakland’s Rockridge district is where you’ll find white-hot trends to keep your look current through the season. Look for military-inspired styles, boleros, over-the-knee boots, and fingerless gloves, as seen on the runways of Versace, Halston, and Burberry.
A great place to start is 5901 College Avenue, where Crossroads Trading Co. recently moved to a larger space with its inventory of funky consignment apparel. This is the place to find discounted designer jeans or skinny cargoes to rock that military trend, without blowing your budget.
Next, head south a couple blocks to Fit, on the west side of College. This store is small but stocked, and offers a mix of apparel essentials and shoes among fashion-forward pieces like a Diane von Furstenberg velvet burnout dress.
Hunger setting in? Head to the downstairs Oliveto Café, where wood-fired pizzas and panini are an art form.
Continuing south toward Broadway, you’ll find Chic boutique, with its welcoming and spacious collection of European-style eclectic apparel. This is also the place to look for that bolero or shrug. Stella Carakasi has made its debut next door, selling a pleasant assortment of boiled wool jackets by Two Star Dog.
Block off time to explore Atomic Garden across the street, where eco- minded sophistication reigns. The boutique offers sustainable clothes from Prairie Underground as well as home decor and even fingerless gloves by Pip-Squeak Chapeau. As you make your way back to your car, don’t forget Iniam, a luxurious boutique, carrying dressed-up day looks plus festive frocks. Finally, to reward yourself for a day well spent, Powell’s Sweet Shoppe just opened near Alcatraz and offers a smorgasbord of flavorful confections.
