Owner of Lafayette’s new Boutique, J. Colleen.
After becoming an accomplished filmmaker, with stints in London, Hawaii, and New York, Julie Rubio has opened J. Colleen, a Lafayette boutique. In addition to clothing and accessories inspired by Rubio’s travels, she also sells original work from Bay Area artists. We caught up with Rubio for the scoop on what’s hot.
“Right now, I’m going through a casual, boho kind of phase. I like dresses with peekaboos in the back and comfortable, wearable heels. Moving into winter, I like chunky oversized sweaters. So a mix of comfort and sexy: I’m a wife and mother, but I still like to be a woman.”
When it comes to arm candy, more is better. “Stack big bangles on one arm and pearls on the other. Pearls are coming back into style. We have gorgeous Hawaiian black pearl jewelry from AimHi here at the store.”
Chilly Weather Wear
Skinny pants and scarves. “I have a line called Indah that is amazing. They’ve made a new ruched pant as well as scrubs. These are not your typical scrubs: They’ll make you look sexy and gorgeous. Spanx workout pants are also a good choice for bottoms. Add a Chaser T-shirt, which has a peekaboo in the back. Throw a Press sweater over it, wrap an infinity scarf around your neck, and you’re good to go.”
Spring Color Staple
Navy reigned for fall, but bright cobalt blue is coming into play. Expect to see plenty of this color in Rubio’s shop; it’s the shade of her favorite bag as well as her car. “It looks great on both blondes and brunettes. It’s such a universal color.”
Words of Wisdom
“Don’t be afraid to be yourself: Show your characteristics through style. And mix it up. We are constantly changing as people, so maybe it’s time to try something new. Fashion can be a lot of fun.”
