Luxurious clothing and real-life models plucked from the store’s client list delight audiences at Serrahna’s fashion shows. Several times a year, women ranging in age from 21 to 84 take to the runway at various East Bay venues to flaunt owner Andrea Serrahn’s collections, which are inspired by her backpacking trips through India.

Serrahn designs contemporary clothing using Indian textiles, and all her garments are hand-tailored and -stitched by workers in India. The result is smoldering: figure-flattering swing coats, skirts, scarves, and stoles in brilliant shades such as gold, indigo, copper, amethyst, and mint.

This month, the boutique celebrates its fifth year in business with an anniversary soiree and sale. Catch the next fashion show in a private garden on September 16 (call the store for more information).

At Sam, you’ll find soft, swingy dresses by Catherine Malandrino, Milly, Geren Ford, Tory Burch, and Mint. Pair them with flip-flops while you run errands around Broadway Plaza, then slip into wedges before making a cameo at P. F. Chang’s, Va de Vi, or Bing Crosby’s (all voted Best Places to See and Be Seen).

Less than a block away from Sam, Samantha Lee—also owned by Samantha Campbell—is taking the focus off designer denim and delving into fabulous frocks by Lewis Cho, Z-Brand, and Rachel Pally.

I’m not going to the Oscars anytime soon, but if I were, I would head for Chic in Rockridge. This year, I had the pleasure of shopping with someone lucky enough to go to the Academy Awards, and we made our first and last stop at this fashionable boutique. After trying on only five dresses, the choice was obvious: a teal strapless Nicole Miller gown with a small train. I have not seen this dress anywhere else in the Bay Area because owner Rana Mazandarani buys only the most unusual clothes.

Savvy shoppers will find an incredible selection, with a variety of styles and body types. And just to be clear: These aren’t prom dresses, although some fortunate young ladies might find the dress of their dreams. Mark my words, if I ever attend a major event—or if I just want to look drop-dead gorgeous at my next school auction—you’ll see me at Chic.

Some guys aren’t too excited about co-ed salons that primp and pouf. These are the same men who swear by Charlie’s Barber Shop in Danville, where clean cuts are the specialty of the house—and are reasonably priced at $16.

When Benny McKay, owner of Acc’sentials in Pleasanton, dresses men, it’s not in boring grays and pinstripes. He pushes color and pattern in stylish ways that make a man stand out: McKay’s clients often buy right off the gorgeously dressed mannequins in the shop window because the looks are so hot. And more than one wife has instructed her husband to shop at Acc’sentials and to buy whatever McKay advises.

Shopping is now a champagne-soaked affair, thanks to Flaunt and Acc’sentials, which boast designated spaces to relax, recharge, and even throw a party. Hot on the heels of Tri-Valley pedi playgrounds Tootsies and Blondie’s (both of which offer sip-and-splurge parties) comes Up Town Girls, a salon and boutique in Livermore. Here you can sate a craving for a new lip-plumping liner and gloss or a sweetly scented shower gel—and book a BYOB makeover party for you and your deserving entourage.
