Fresh flowers on the table at a taqueria joint? Yes—the new El Aguila is a cut above your run-of-the-mill taqueria. Co-owner and chef Oscar Patlan’s experience cooking at top Italian restaurants shines in the clean, healthy flavors seen only in the best Mexican fare.
Start with the tacos ($2.15), prepared simply with your choice of meat and chopped onions and cilantro, atop delicious house-made tortillas (which could stand on their own seasoned with a little salt and lime). But don’t skip the meats—in particular, the cochinita en adobo (roast suckling pig) and spicy, oh-so-tender house-made chorizo. Burritos ($6.50) are ample, fresh, and come served pretty as a picture, tucked into a paper envelope.
Beyond soda: Order the aguas frescas, fresh-made juices (orange and carrot), or even cappuccinos.
Beyond burritos: Explore the whole menu—with delights like the crispy cheese and epazote mushroom quesadilla ($4), a tostada with tinga (pulled chicken braised with caramelized onions and chipotle, $2.50), and banana leaf–wrapped tamales smothered with rich, Oaxaca-style mole sauce ($8.75).
Beyond meat: Go vegetarian with the mushroom quesadilla, or the claypot-cooked beans and tlacoyo (fried masa cake) with nopalitos cactus and queso fresco.
