The List: July
Cool off this summer, with concerts by the Bay, scenes from the Impressionists, and a night hike.
Impressionists on the Water / Sailboats On The Seine By Claude Monet
Impressionists on the Water
(6/1–10/13) While America’s Cup sails the Bay, more than 80 nautical scenes from Impressionist masters such as Monet, Renoir, and Pissarro are on display at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor. impressionists.famsf.org.
Sculpture in the Garden
(6/14–7/13) Artists display their work among the succulents of Walnut Creek’s Ruth Bancroft Garden at this annual exhibit, which includes gardening workshops and an Agave and Tequila Sunset Social. ruthbancroftgarden.org.
Romeo and Juliet
(7/3–7/28) Former Artistic Director Shana Cooper returns to Cal Shakes’ outdoor amphitheater to stage a uniquely spare adaptation of the tragic tale, with only five actors playing all the supporting roles and even accompanying themselves on musical instruments. calshakes.org.
Fourth of July Fireworks
(7/4) Celebrate America at one of the East Bay’s fireworks shows in Berkeley, Concord, Livermore, Martinez, Moraga, and Pleasant Hill—or head to Dublin to legally buy and set off your own in one of the city’s designated zones.
(7/13) Look and listen for local owls and Common Poorwills on a three-mile evening hike through White Canyon with the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association. Don’t forget binoculars—and a flashlight. mdia.org.
Food and Wine
Urban Wine eXperience
(7/27) More than 17 urban wineries, from Alameda to Berkeley, pair their vino with local restaurant bites at this Jack London Square event, which also includes live music and dancing. eastbayvintners.com.
Rockin’ the Bay
While its temporary waterfront pavilion at Piers 27 and 29 is decidedly chilly (Diablo staffers recommend near-stage seating and lots of layers), the America’s Cup Concert Series features big-name, totally-worth-it talent. Here are a few upcoming highlights:
7/18: Counting Crows
8/17: Steely Dan
9/1: Jason Mraz
9/7: Sammy Hagar
9/25: The Lumineers
