Real Metalmen Love Cats
An Oakland-based photographer pairs heavy metal musicians with kitty cats.
From Metal Cats by Alexandra Crockett, published by PowerHouse Books
Oakland photographer Alexandra Crockett’s new book, Metal Cats, reveals the sweeter side of “metaldudes”—rockers known for some seriously dark lyrics and fashion statements. Crockett juxtaposes the musicians with their fluffy felines in more than 300 soulful photos.
“Metal music portrays the dark side of humanity,” Crockett says, “and I think the men are portrayed as not having emotional content. Holding cats lovingly lets their feelings come through.”
What surprised Crockett? “Some of the men I photographed had four-plus cats,” she says, “and were more like a cat lady than I am.” And, yes, she confides, “Metal-dudes do speak baby talk to their cats.”
A portion of the proceeds from Crockett’s book and related musical events will help support no-kill shelters. $12.95, powerhousebooks.com.
