Cheap Eats -- Las Montañas Market
Feed four people for $11.50 in 10 minutes? Las Montañas Market does it.
Suppose it’s five o’clock on a weeknight and you would rather enter a bullfighting ring than cook dinner. For the best deal on take-out food this side of the Mexican border, check out the chicken combo meal at Las Montañas Market in the Park ‘n’ Shop center. For $11.50, you get a delicious roasted chicken, refried beans, rice, green tomatillo salsa and red tomato salsa, and a stack of corn or flour tortillas. With enough food for four people, it’s an unheard-of steal.
FULL OF FLAVOR: We don’t know what they’re basting those birds with to make them so succulent, but keep it coming.
TAQUERIA ON WHEELS: One chicken combo makes a help-yourself mini menu of Mexican dishes, including a soft chicken taco with tomatillo salsa, a burrito, or maybe just chicken with a side of rice and beans.
FAT AND HAPPY: OK, these refried beans are not low-fat. But like all beans, they’re high in iron, protein, and fiber. And, they taste so good—particularly with the Mexican rice—you may need an intervention to stop eating them.
TOMORROW’S LUNCH: Unless you’re up for an entire roast chicken for dinner, you’re going to have leftovers.
IN AND OUT: Even if there’s a line at the taqueria counter (to the right as you enter the store), you can pick up your chicken combo—and a gigantic Hannah Montana piñata—in less than 10 minutes.Las Montañas Market, 1725 Willow Pass Rd., Concord, (925) 687-7417. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily.
