A free cooking class from Walnut Creek Yacht Club's Kevin Weinberg might be the ticket to expanding your child's palette

If you have a finicky eater at your dinner table, hand him or her over to Kevin Weinberg. Every other Saturday throughout the summer, the chef and co-owner of Walnut Creek Yacht Club offers free cooking classes for youngsters, ages six to 13, to help them move beyond childhood cheeseburger addictions.

“We’ve had kids who have never had pesto before, just because it’s green,” Weinberg says. “My goal is to expose them to the culture of food, where it comes from, and how it’s made so they can break out of the ‘I don’t eat that’ mold.”

He starts by passing around fresh herbs or seeds, and explaining to the kids that this is where the flavors they enjoy come from. Then, he shows them how to make something—strawberry shortcake, an omelet, tartar sauce, pesto, or macaroni and cheese—and sends them home with a recipe. Classes are popular, so sign up early.
