Dog’s Best Friend
Free pet adoptions in Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties.
The unconditional love of a miniature schnauzer named Maddie is the inspiration behind more than $100 million in donations to pet causes by Tri-Valley resident and PeopleSoft founder Dave Duffield. This June 9 and 10, Maddie’s Fund will pay for free pet adoptions in Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties. We got the scoop from Duffield.
What’s your ultimate goal?
To create a no-kill nation, where every treatable homeless dog and cat is guaranteed a loving home.
Any special memories?
One adoption [last year] was particularly memorable. Heidi, a 17-year-old blind and deaf dog, was adopted by a hospice nurse who totally fell in love with her. The joy we saw in the animals, as well as the volunteers and the adopters, is the reason we created Maddie’s Fund.
What can people do to help out?
Definitely come out and adopt! There are also ample opportunities to support our local shelters and rescue groups—donating time by volunteering or fostering, and donating money to support and expand their great work.
How to Help:
And here is a really easy way to help: If you’ve adopted from a shelter or rescue group, tell your friends about it. Research shows that people are three times more likely to visit a shelter if they know friends or family who’ve adopted from one.
