Regular Joes

Published:

Pop into Ann’s Sunshine Cafe in Pleasant Hill and you’ll likely see Charles Hayes (right) and Ron Irelan cracking each other up. The brothers-in-law are two of the diner’s many regulars—folks who brave 8 a.m. traffic snarls to sit down and chat over hot joe and hash browns. But why do they choose the Sunshine over Starbucks?

"Reasonable food at reasonable prices," answers Irelan, a retired grocer and Pleasant Hill resident. "We always get the special, whatever it is. (The Sunshine offers a belly-filling breakfast for $3.75 each weekday morning.)

"This place has a good, positive energy," adds Hayes, a self-proclaimed enlightenment master who drives down from Benicia to hang out with Irelan. "Plus, we like to harass Cathy [one of the Sunshine servers]."

"Ain’t that the truth," laughs Cathy, as she freshens up the fellas’ coffee.
