Walk It Off

Quit working and start walking. That’s the message from Wellness City Challenge, which just kicked off Walking Wednesdays, its latest Walnut Creek–wide fitness initiative. This program encourages people to take a midday break once a week and get physical. “People get so caught up with work that they can’t get out and exercise,” says program director Pete Bauman.

The same people who brought the city the Healthy Restaurant Association have organized the strolls to take place every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Four routes—downtown, Shadelands Office Park, Rossmoor, and near John Muir Medical Center—are one to two miles long. Local businesses are cosponsoring; those located along the routes will offer walkers snacks or bottles of water. Walkers receive an added incentive in the form of discount cards good at Sports Basement and other stores.
