Sample sweets on the cheap at The Sweet Shoppe festival in Oakland
Attention, chocolate lovers: Mark your calendars. The Sweet Shoppe, a two-day festival celebrating “all that is sweet,” premieres at Oakland’s Jack London Square May 8 and 9.
Sample all manner of goodies, including truffles, cookies, cupcakes, and caramels from Bay Area producers. Confectioner Shiyuan Deng of Oakland-based Double Dutch Sweets will be on hand with dessert sauces, including a savory-and-sweet salted caramel and chocolate sauce. Barlovento Chocolates, also from Oakland, will bring its full line of truffles and caramels, as well as its signature chocolate-covered dried cherries. Or try a Meyer lemon truffle, flavored with zest from lemons grown in chocolatier Peter Brydon’s backyard in Berkeley.
Visitors will be able to watch pastry and confection demonstrations on the Sticky Stage, or try flights of champagne at the Bubble Bar. In the La Petite Sweet children’s area, kids can learn hands-on dessert-making skills.Visit sweetshoppefests.com for tickets ($7–$12) and information.
