A Zen Escape in Walnut Creek

Ever since she was a teenager, Jen Doerger has been collecting spa brochures and dreaming up her ideal list of perfect treatments. As she contemplated her milestone 40th birthday, she decided it was time to take the plunge—and shortly thereafter opened The Woodhouse Day Spa in Walnut Creek.

The Woodhouse has an extensive list of luscious treatments—wild lavender and seaweed sugar scrubs, hydrotherapy facials, and warm agave nectar pedicures. Go big for Mom on Mother’s Day, and book her The Woodhouse Escape ($235). The 110-minute treatment includes a full-body peppermint sugar glow scrub followed by a Himalayan salt–stone massage, neck and shoulder massage with essential oils, and foot reflexology in a peaceful room.

Afterward, make a reservation for the two of you at the fireside dining area, with nibbles provided by local restaurants.

And to cap off the day, let your mom grab a few goodies for at-home relaxation: Woodhouse uses Voya’s organic skincare products made with seaweed to nourish and exfoliate. We like the detoxifying seaweed bath ($32) and the Sonoma Lavender gift set ($18), which includes soap, bath salts, a candle, and a lavender sachet.

Don’t forget the flowers . . .

Brighten Mom’s day with peonies from Walnut Creek’s new Fringe Flower Company. “Moms love peonies, and Mother’s Day is right at the beginning of local peony season,” says co-owner Jeanne Walker. Ask for the arrangement in a vintage teacup, or go with Fringe’s signature hand-tied bouquet, with craft paper and striped black-and-white ribbon. fringeflowers.com.

. . . Or the booze

Skip the wine, and grab a bottle of Sutherland Distilling Company’s Diablo’s Shadow Rye Whiskey, released in March after two years of aging. Take Mom for a taste of limited-release small-batch spirits at the distillery’s newly remodeled tasting room, and pick up a bottle of the whiskey, which is also available at select Bay Area bottle shops. $60, sutherlanddistilling.com.
