Make-your-own trail mix
John Winslow was sick of having to pick raisins out of his trail mix. On a backpacking trip last spring, he and longtime friend Gabe Bruck decided to do something about it.
“We were sitting in a rest stop, eating some trail mix,” says Winslow, 25. “And it seemed like there had to be a better way—so you didn’t have to pick the raisins out.”
That was when the Piedmont natives had an epiphany: custom trail mix. And last May, Barking Buffalo Trail Mix was born.
Shoppers can log on to the company’s website and choose their own combinations of fresh ingredients, ranging from standards like peanuts and raisins to local gourmet products such as Semifreddi’s biscotti bits and Scharffen Berger chocolate. The website keeps a running tally of the mix’s nutritional content and cost—which averages about $5 for 12 ounces—and the order is shipped within two business days. The concept has proven popular for outdoors enthusiasts and office workers alike.
“We started out with hikers in mind,” says Bruck, 26, “but we realized that it’s got a broader appeal. It’s a really high-quality custom snack.”
