We talked to Elaine Clark, CEO of Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services, about serving a milestone 10 million meals.
Q: How did Meals on Wheels Contra Costa get started?
A: Nurses in the county were concerned after patients were being released home without any ways to feed themselves. So they started making food to send home with patients, which led to Meals on Wheels. Now, 10 million meals have been served across Contra Costa.
Q: What is the program’s goal?
A: We provide so much more than food. We provide visits and social workers. We connect seniors with any other services they may need.
Q: How many volunteers are there?
A: We have more than 1,200 volunteers. But we always need more, especially in the East County. We have dedicated volunteers who have been helping for 10, 15, even 20 years. It’s really a labor of love.
Q: What is one of your most memorable meals served?
A: I delivered a meal to a woman who used to be a painter. When I started talking about one of her paintings, her face lit up, and she showed me 10 more. These are people with rich stories who have lived amazing lives and have a gift to give. mowsos.org. —Lauren Bonney
