Three Course Tour

The Hotel Shattuck Plaza offers a gourmet package that highlights Berkeley's bounty.

Andrew Bannecker

Been meaning to get to Berkeley to try one of the dozens of new restaurants popping up? Or maybe you’ve been trying to make it back to one of the city’s long-standing dining destinations? Hotel Shattuck makes it easy, with a one-night gourmet getaway package that includes a tour of the Gourmet Ghetto and the Berkeley Farmers Market.

After check in, Banks White, executive chef of the hotel’s American bistro, Five, leads a group through the farmers market, where you get to meet the farmers and taste the produce.

Next, a separate tour heads to the Gourmet Ghetto, making stops at a few Berkeley staples, which may include the Cheese Board Collective, Saul’s Delicatessen, Alegio Chocolate, Café Gratitude, or Grégoire. Once you’re stuffed full of potato puffs, pastrami on rye, and raw juice, the group returns to the hotel kitchen to help chef White brainstorm ideas for what to do with the fruits and veggies from that morning’s shopping.

“We’ll come up with different dishes and just create in the kitchen,” White says. The chef puts on a cooking demonstration, culminating in a three-course dinner that features Berkeley’s bounty.

The next culinary getaway is Oct. 2–3. Cost is $375 for two, $295 for individuals. To book, call (510) 225-6015, or go to hotelshattuckplaza.com.
